Erzya
(Erzya-Mordovian) language - one of the Mordovian languages belonging
to the Finno-Ugric family. Spoken
in the eastern part of the Republic of
Mordovia, in the Samara, Penza,
Orenburg, Ulyanovsk,
Nizhny Novgorod, Saratov, Chelyabinsk
and other regions, in Bashkortostan,
Tatarstan, Chuvashia.
The number of the Mordovians in Russia is 1 073 thousand. 69,0 % of them
regard the Mordovian languages (Erzya or Moksha) as their mother tongue,
30,8 % Russian.
The Erzya literary language was formed after the October revolution
of 1917. It is based on the dialect of the village of Kozlovka in the Atyashevo
district of Mordovia. The norms of the literary language were unified by
1930. The writing system has been based on the Russian alphabet since the
18th century.
