Yakut language - one of the Turkic languages. Spoken in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) as well as in the Amur, Magadan, Sakhalin regions and the Taimyr and Evenki autonomous districts. The number of the Yakuts in Russia is 380,2 thousand. 94,0 % of them regard Yakut as their mother tongue, 5,9 % Russian. Yakut is also spoken among the Evenki and other peoples of the Russian North and Far East.

The first Yakut text was published in 1705. Translated religious literature and folklore texts in phonetic transcription were printed beginning from 1819. A common writing system was created in 1922 (S.A. Novgorodov's alphabet). In 1929 the reformed Novgorodov script was replaced by a new Latin alphabet, and a Russian-based script has been used since in 1939.
